Morfem

Lead singer Jimi Multhazam spends his regular hours fronting hugely popular new wave group The Upstairs.

But when he’s not, he’s making rock music with Morfem, a band that mixes the aggressiveness of 1980s hardcore groups such as Black Flag — before they turned into a thrash metal band — with the dissonant crunch of Pacific Northwest grunge acts like Nirvana and Mudhoney. Morfem’s live shows are brusque yet controlled and resoundingly tight.

Unlike The Upstairs’ performance persona, which embraces post-modern geekery (jerky body movements and frantic pacing), Morfem focuses on improvisational moves and spontaneous flailings; Jimi seems more comfortable and true to himself performing the latter.

Behind him, guitarist Pandu Fathoni’s plays deceptively simple riffs hunched over his guitar and effect boxes, somewhat reminiscent of alternative icon J Mascis from American group Dinosaur Jr.
